In this class, we will look at the letters that Tolkein wrote his children, discuss them, and read these letters to see a different side to Tolkein. His stories discuss many characters including Father Christmas, polar bears, cave bears, Man on the Moon, goblins, elves, and snow-men. We will be looking at this book and the Father Christmas stories from a non-secular viewpoint of the creativity of the stories and drawings. Week 1: Who was Tolkein? We will read a few of the letters and discuss them. Homework: Read up to page 40. Week 2: The magic in each letter and how Tolkein's children are growing up based on his stories. Homework: Read pages 40 to 75. Week 3: What makes these letters unique? What are the new characters? Homework: Read pages 76 to 111. Week 4: We will be going over some more of the letters that Father Christmas sent the children. There will be no homework. Although students can of course read other stories in the book that we do not get to and message any questions.
