Class Experience

Pronti per parlare di cibo?
Cosa vi piace mangiare?
Do you know real Italian food?

In this multi-day class, we will speak Italian, review some grammar, and especially discuss Italian food! Pizza, pasta and other many important ingredients will not only make us want to eat them, but also speak Italian in a fun way.

We will focus on a different basic dish each class, and elaborate on it: what ingredients usually go with it? How is it made? How do Italians eat it? What do you like in/on it?
I will use visuals and some recipes, and post videos to the classroom from real Italian chefs.

Here is the plan:

Class 1: La regina delle pizze: Margherita o Marinara? (The queen of pizzas: Margherita or Marinara?)
Let's talk about the original pizza and the pizza we like.
Each pizza is different and that's alright: every pizza is good pizza, no?

Class 2: Lasagna al forno col ragù o no? (Oven lasagna with ragù or not?)
Have you ever made lasagna? What is put inside? Let's talk about different lasagne.
It's not just making layers, do you put cheese in it? On it? Let's see.

Class 3: Formaggio sulla pasta, si o no? (Cheese on pasta, yes or no?)
Which cheese and over which pasta? Let's talk about how Italians actually match cheeses to pastas.
Which cheese do we like on pasta?

Class 4: La carbonara o il pesto? (Carbonara or pesto?)
Let's chat about these fampus sauces and have a vote.
We'll look at the ingredients for each one and you might be surprised!

Class 5: La granita siciliana o il gelato? (Sicilian granita or gelato?)
Did you know where gelato first originated?
Do you know what Sicilian granita is?
Let's talk about this amazing desert, snack or worldwide prize.

This class is intended for students who have had some contact with the Italian language, but some English will be used if necessary. Real beginners are welcome, too.

    Hello! ¡Hola! Ciao! Salut!

My name is Kristina and I would love to help you enjoy and love reading and language learning as much as I do!

I offer classes in English, Spanish, French and Italian for all levels, through workshops and classes on hobbies or other subjects such as geography, history, culture, cooking, songs, and my very special Story Time and "Kraft" for the little ones. I also offer conversation and book clubs, and private tutoring on demand. I am a huge literacy advocate and teach children phonics, too.

I grew up trilingual in northwestern Spain, and went to school in Spain, the UK, and the US. I got a BA in English with a minor in Linguistics, and then got certified to teach in secondary and higher education, but have always followed my passion to teach languages in Early Childhood and through stories and music. I am also CELTA certified, have the Young Learners extension of CELTA and a British Council certificate on Early Childhood Language Acquisition.
I have been tutoring and teaching children of all ages, including parent-child groups since 2001, in language schools since 2006, and freelance since 2010. I have also worked with different school districts and exam centers as well as kindergartens, day care centers, elementary, middle and high schools in Spain, Italy, the UK, Germany, and now the US. I love to help parents who are raising their kids bilingual or trilingual, too!

My goal is to try and motivate the student so they will try to communicate in the language they are learning from day 1. I want my students to have a memorable learning experience that will stay with them, through reading, singing and being as creative as we can. I believe in the importance of play, and of using the resources we have at home to create things. With teenagers, I believe in the importance of having good raport and focusing on the students' interests.

I have a kerry blue terrier who has lived with me in 4 countries so far, and he is my teaching assistant! I also love to cook, make art and especially sing. For exercise I walk and run, but I also do karate. I love books and never think I should get rid of a single one, and a renewed passion of mine is gardening, I love herbs and strawberries! My favorite animal, you guessed it, is the frog.
