In this one-week camp, learners will write a poem, prepare their spoken word and perform it to the class.

Spoken Word is an umbrella term that includes poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry and hip hop. Spoken Word differs from written poetry because of its emphasis on the rhythmic way words sound. It is a broad designation for poetry intended for performance. Though some spoken word poetry may also be published on the page, the genre has its roots in oral traditions and performance. Spoken word can encompass or contain elements of rap, hip-hop, storytelling, theater, and jazz, rock, blues, and folk music.

Each week will look at a different piece of writing and learners will be encouraged to discover it for themselves by putting their own stamp on it.  Each week focuses on a different poem, story, rap or similar.  Learners will explore how to bring it to life and perform it in their own way.

Come to class prepared with your activity sheet, notebook and pens and ready to share your ideas and perform your very own spoken word!
