Class Experience

US Grade 4
In this engaging and interactive class, we’ll review 4th grade spelling patterns through games, challenges, and fun activities. Each session is a standalone class that covers specific spelling patterns, so learners can join anytime without needing prior attendance. This class is designed to reinforce previously taught spelling patterns, but no prior experience is required. This class is great for students currently in or reviewing 4th grade spelling patterns. It's perfect for learners seeking to strengthen their spelling, boost vocabulary, and have fun while learning. All learners are welcome! Join for a fun and interactive way to sharpen your spelling skills!

We will focus on reviewing and practicing the following spelling patterns:

December 26, 2024: Vowel pairs and schwa sounds
   • Schwa + n (eleven, button, bargain, …)
   • Long vowel pairs oa, ow, oo (toaster, owner, poodle, …)
   • Vowel pairs ai, ee, ea (freezer, peanut, rainbow, …)

December 27, 2024: Word endings
   • -al/-il/-ile/-le ending (pupil, proposal, juvenile, crumble, …)
   • -cher/-sher/-ure ending (rancher, freshser, pasture, …)

January 2, 2025: Initial and final consonant patterns
   • Unaccented initial syllables a-, de-, be- (divide, between, degree, …)
   • Initial and final hard and soft c and g (genius, cyclist, gutter, distance, village, …)
   • /k/ spelled ck, -ic, -ch (nickel, stomach, electric, …)

January 3, 2025: Unique sounds and endings
•/qw/ and /k/ spelled qu (equipment, sequence, mosquito, …)
   • -et/-it ending (puppet, buffet, rabbit, hermit, …)

Each session will begin with a brief, teacher-guided activity to sort or brainstorm words for the day's patterns. Afterward, students will practice the patterns through interactive games like Kahoot!, BINGO, Tic-Tac-Toe, or Memory. When time permits, additional cooperative games like Beat the Clock, Pictionary, or Charades will be included to reinforce the patterns in a fun and relaxed setting.

I foster a supportive and collaborative environment where students feel encouraged to participate. My teaching style emphasizes active learning, with students engaging in cooperative and hands-on activities. Learners will practice writing words as part of the games and receive guidance throughout the class to strengthen their spelling skills.

I will post an announcement in the Outschool classroom the day before class meets with any printables we might use. If students don't have access to a printer, that's okay! The printables will be simple and straightforward, so students can easily replicate them on any paper or whiteboard they have at home.

Since each session is a standalone class, students can join at any point and fully participate without needing to catch up. I will welcome all leaners warmly and ensure they feel comfortable and included.

Note: A similar spelling review class will be offered in spring and summer for continued practice and reinforcement of these important skills!
