What an exciting place to be each week, reading different books with the teacher and new friends we meet in this month long reading, comprehension and fluency reading book club. Over a four week period students read aloud selected books, express their opinions through discussion, work on pronunciation, comprehension and fluency. We get a little writing in, too.
This book club allows learners to read out loud, hear others read, read cooperatively with other learners and the teacher, have lively discussions, work on their pronunciation, definitions and spelling of vocabulary words from the stories we read, work on fluency including accuracy, pace, and expression.
Learners continue for four weeks, meeting one time a week and enjoy every book as they improve their reading level, comprehension, critical thinking skills, understand the principles of how a book/story is written including setting, analyzing characters, plot, climax, sequence of events, predicting, summarizing; give opinions, evaluate and learn about different genres. At times learners will have the opportunity to write a different ending to the book/story.

Learners will be introduced to new books to read aloud and
○ improve reading fluency through accuracy, pace and expression
○ develop critical thinking skills
○ discuss details and highlights from the story
○ recall sequence of events
○ express and predict how the ending could be changed
○ summarize and retell the story in their own words
○ expand their imagination
○ socially interact with other Book Club learners through discussion
○ gain and expand the love of reading

Parents, please feel free to check out each book on the Book Club reading list to ensure its appropriateness for your learner and that you are comfortable with the content.

Supply List
○ a copy of each book on the reading list [available in book stores, online and at most public libraries; you can also Google used children books and find less expensive copies] ○ listening ears ○ thinking cap ○ imagination and creativity ○ willingness to participate and read aloud in a group setting

As a Principal and educator of 50+ years, I always read in my classroom, as Tutor, volunteer teacher around the world and as a Principal to large and small groups of students at a time. Additionally, I was trained via classes at the Los Angeles Music Center on story telling methods. Who doesn't like a good story, or good book? As a precocious reader I was known as Lady Snoop in my younger years and friends sometime still call me that today.
