Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
In this 10-week course, we will read aloud two chapters each week then we will discuss them and the previous chapters as a group. We will cover the various myths presented in the novel, such as the heroes, gods, monsters, and curses, as well as any themes, like Percy's desire to make his mother proud, his and his campmates' resentment towards their godly parentage for abandonment, and the power of friendship. Each chapter is slightly different in length so some weeks might have more reading than others but, for the most part, we should have at least 15 minutes of discussion time to review the chapters and glean any insights we might've taken away from them.

I aim to have a teaching style that is as dialectical as can be. I want my students to grow into capable critical thinkers which is why this course is so valuable for everyone regardless of age. We grow from our past experiences (in this case, ancient experiences) to create a brighter future.

While I plan on reading aloud each class session, if a student would like to take a turn reading to their peers (absolutely not mandatory), they may. After we are done reading for the day, we will discuss the chapters as a group.

Students do not need to have read or know anything about Greek mythology in order to enjoy this novel. It is a fantastic foray into children's literature and mythology. If a student is coming into the class after the first session, it would behoove them to catch up to us in the novel but it is not required to join us. All are welcome!
Learning Goals
Students will have a greater understanding of Greek mythology and mythology in general as well as its purpose in modern society.
Students will increase their vocabulary.
