Class experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This book club offers a fun, discussion-based learning experience for tweens. It provides them with an opportunity to explore diverse life experiences while making social connections with their peers. For each unique book, we will meet once a week for three weeks (dates will be listed below). Students are encouraged to read the suggested pages before each class. However, if they fall behind or start late, they can still participate in discussions. Additionally, students will receive...
By the end of each book, students will have gained insights into different individuals or situations, fostering empathy or allowing them to relate the story to their own experiences.
In my previous position as a college instructor, I frequently assigned memoirs as required reading for my family services classes. This approach enabled students to delve into real-life experiences rather than solely relying on textbooks. We then engaged in discussions about the readings and explored how they could be relevant to both personal and professional aspects of their lives. Now, as I transition to working with younger students, my goal remains the same: to offer them opportunities to explore diverse people and experiences. By introducing them to graphic novels tailored for tweens, I aim to provide enjoyable and educational group discussions.
Homework Offered
The "homework" for this class is just to read the assigned pages before each session. The number of hours spent will vary depending on each child's reading and comprehension abilities.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

In addition to the books we will read, I will provide printable note-taking worksheets.
We'll be discussing topics that touch on diverse subjects like race, bullying, autism, and anxiety. I will keep our discussions light-hearted, steering clear of deep or heavy conversations. Parents are encouraged to review the content of the books to ensure they're appropriate for their child and to be ready for any questions that may arise from the topics discussed. At commonsensemedia.org you can find ratings and reviews by parents. Amazon.com is also a good place to learn more about the books.
