3 in-class hoursClass Experience
Beginning readers will practice reading aloud in their very own chapter book! In each two-week long class, we will read a different fairy book from the Rainbow Magic series by Daisy Meadows. This class is perfect for students who can already read most of the words in these books (which are at roughly a grade 2-3 reading level and a grade K-3 interest level) but would benefit from encouragement and support. Each meeting will start with check-ins and ice breakers. Then, the teacher will give a short mini-lesson on the "skill of the session," which will focus on reading comprehension and/or fluency. Afterwards, we will take turns reading aloud from our Rainbow Magic fairy book, while pausing to discuss when appropriate. During each meeting, we will read one chapter of the book (every Rainbow Magic book has six chapters). If we finish reading the chapter during the meeting and there is time left over, we will do drawing or writing activities to solidify our comprehension of the chapter. If we do not finish reading the chapter during the meeting, students will be requested to finish reading the chapter on their own or with a grown-up before the next meeting. All students must have their own copy of the book (you can see the book for each session at the bottom of the course description and in the "Learner Supply List" section). It's perfectly okay if a student has trouble reading some of the words or gets tired after reading long chunks of text - that's what this class is for! We'll all support each other and encourage each other and if a student needs a break from reading aloud, we'll move to the next student or to the teacher reading aloud, all while encouraging them for the next time. "Focus Skills" for each meeting Meeting 1: Reading aloud with confidence Meeting 2: Reading aloud with expression Meeting 3: Making predictions Meeting 4: Reading aloud with fluency Meeting 5: Asking questions Meeting 6: Summarizing Rainbow Magic books for each session Session starting April 6: Kathryn the Gym Fairy

Supply List
All learners must have a copy of the book that we are reading for the session. You may purchase a copy (they are readily available at all major retailers) or check one out from your local library if that is an option for you. It's okay to have a physical book or an e-book - whichever you prefer. The particular book needed depends on the session you have enrolled in. Here is the list of which book we will be reading for each session: Session starting April 6: Kathryn the Gym Fairy (The teacher will have the paperback version published by Scholastic USA in 2014. If you have a different version, that's fine - just know that some words and page numbers may be different).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
