Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
This class will recap letter formation, then teach the main joins, following the UK cursive style of handwriting. Please see the class image to confirm this is the style you are looking for, and feel free to contact me with any queries or for further information.

The class will consist of two sessions each week, with new content becoming available on Mondays and Thursdays. Each session will begin with a pre-recorded video of between 10 and 15 minutes. Links will be provided for these unlisted videos on YouTube. Each learner can view and follow along with at their own pace, pausing or replaying sections as they choose. The videos will begin with a warm up for your hands and fingers, followed by detailed demonstrations of the focus of the session (see below). Practise pages will be available to print off for learners to complete independently, which can be uploaded to the classroom for review by the teacher. I will provide personal feedback on all work uploaded. Learners will have the opportunity to provide and receive feedback on their work from their peers, in the form of two stars and a wish. They will also have the opportunity to carry out self assessment.

Please note: UK conventions for spelling, date format and so on will be used in this class.

There will be two introductory videos:
1. An introduction to setting yourself up for handwriting practise. The video will cover how to position your paper, chair and table. We will look at a selection of writing implements (pens, pencils etc) and consider how to hold and use them.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Emily Selfe.

I have taught hundreds of children between the ages of 4 and 11 in UK primary schools over the last 15 years and I'm now super excited to teach here on Outschool!

I'm very experienced in the UK curriculum and my classes will cover essential skills in maths and English for children in the primary age range. I offer scheduled group classes and I'm also available for 1:1 tutoring, either as a one-off or on an ongoing basis. I'd love to hear from you if this is something you're interested in. I can be flexible in my availability, so please do contact me if the time you'd like doesn't appear in my listings.

I also love crafts and baking. I firmly believe that the skills, resilience and creativity needed for those kinds of practical activities are massively important for children as they grow and develop, so I’m delighted to be able to offer classes in those as well.

I previously worked in a fabric, haberdashery and craft shop, where I learnt about so many different skills, techniques and crafts. I enjoy sewing, including dressmaking and embroidery. I also like to knit, especially to create winter accessories like hats as well as fun Christmas decorations. Paper crafts are another of my interests and I enjoy making small decorative items as well as functional ones.

I ran an after school cooking club for three years, with children aged 7 – 10. I taught skills like how to use knives safely, weighing and measuring ingredients, food hygiene and how to follow a recipe, as well as the specific techniques called for in each recipe. I have a City & Guilds Level 2 certificate in Food Safety and Hygiene, which I renew every 3 years. I grew up with an amazing home-baking Granny and I’ve enjoyed carrying this on with my own children, and passing it on to the children I work with!

In my spare time I volunteer as a leader for Girl Guides and Rainbows, so of course I bring a little of those values and skills into my classroom too. In this role, I have worked with girls aged 5-7 and 10-16 over the last 20 years. We’ve done so much together, including crafts, cooking and camping – not forgetting the adventurous activities like abseiling, fire lighting and kayaking!

I hope to see you in class soon and would love to be part your Outschool journey.
