What's included

1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hours
Homework
As an optional extension of learning assignment, students could try conducting this investigation without using any salt (changing a single variable is what we call this in science). They would then observe any differences in the results received.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
In this fun, interactive, hands-on, and tasty science class, your students will utilize the scientific method while making their own ice cream. Students' ice cream making will be the conduit whereby they will witness and explore changing states of matter.

Specific topics covered include:
✦ identifying the 3 states of matter
✦ understanding how matter can change forms
✦ applying the steps of the scientific method as true scientists do
✦ utilizing the 6 science process skills: observing, communicating, classifying, inferring, measuring, and predicting.

Although this class is geared towards elementary students and has a huge focus on fun, there is a true emphasis on allowing students to function as real scientists do. My philosophy is that fun and authentic learning should be congruent. They should never be mutually exclusive. I further believe in valuing student input and questions, respecting students' various learning styles, and creating a welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment where all students feel comfortable to participate, ask questions, and share information.

There is no prior background knowledge required to participate in this class.

At the end of this class, students will enjoy eating the ice cream that they made!

Siblings: You must purchase a separate enrollment for each child that is participating, even if two children are working on the same device. This is an Outschool Policy.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the following Next Generation Science Standards:

✦ Science and Engineering Practices
     •planning and carrying out investigations
      •analyzing and interpreting data
✦ Disciplinary Core Ideas
     •structure and properties of matter
     •3 types of matter
•heating/cooling leading to chemical change in matter

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree in Elementary Education. I have taught middle-elementary students (grades 2-4) for well over 20 years. Although I have taught all subjects, I absolutely love, love, love science, and have I taught it to hundreds of students during numerous hands-on and interactive science experiments, science investigations, and STEM/STEAM challenges over the course of my career as an educator. It is my hope that I can inspire a love of science in the students that I teach.
