In this one time course, your child will be introduced to block coding through the Scratch website. This course is geared towards the beginner coder, and no experience with coding is necessary! This class is very direct instruction based since this is an introductory level class. Students in the Level 2 and 3 class are given half the class for discussion among peers.
The class will be broken into three main parts:
- Introductions and basic features of the Scratch website, with a focus on using loops
- Students will follow along and recreate a basic game
- Students will finish the class by sharing their game with their classmates
For a post class assignment, students will be encouraged to make a second game on their own and then share it to our Outschool classroom!
**Parents, please make sure your child has signed up on the Scratch website before our class. Also, some parents have mentioned that they prefer to have two devices open rather than splitting the screen, though it is not necessary. Thanks!
Learning Goals
Students will learn:
- basics operations and features in Scratch, with a focus on using loops
- how to thinking creatively when doing block coding
- analyzing systematically when errors arise

Hello! My name is Rebecca Rivera and I can't wait to meet you! I have a degree in History and Government with Teacher Certification from Kean University in New Jersey, U.S.A., and I am a certified Level 1 and Level 2 Google Educator. I have been a teacher since 2008. Currently, I teach technology and STEM at a local middle school. I have also taught social studies, English Language Arts, and computers to middle school students. I loved bringing STEM into social studies! In 2018 I had the great honor of being named Teacher of the Year! I have also been an online teacher since 2017 and am very familiar with what works in an online classroom setting. I believe all students are unique and have something special to bring to class. During our online classes, I create an atmosphere where students will be expected to participate and be involved while also being respectful of others and the learning environment.
When I am not teaching, I love to read, be outdoors, and spend time with my husband, two daughters, and poodle!
See you in class soon!
