Class Experience

Do you love Science? In this Ongoing Class, learners will explore a range of Science subjects in a fun and interactive way. This course aims to provide meaningful learning experiences for young explorers.

Each class will include a range of teaching methods and activities that are designed to engage the learners in both a hands-on and minds-on way. Classes will include experiments, Q&A, quizzes, games, worksheets, videos and much more. Some classes will include breakout rooms.  Learners will be encouraged to observe, explore, question and share what they learn. A variety of methods are used to support learners and cater for different learning styles and needs. 


What is taught in this course? 


Week of 1/4/24 - What is Neuroscience? - study of the brain and nervous system
Week of 8/4/24 - What is Neuroscience? - basic neuroscientific concepts, such as neurons, neurotransmitters, and brain regions
Week of 15/4/24 - What is Neuroscience? - Brain model-building activity: constructing a model of the brain using playdough or clay
Week of 22/4/24 - Neurons and Neural Communication - neurons, including their structure, function, and types
Week of 29/4/24 - Neurons and Neural Communication - neural communication, including action potentials and synapses
Week of 6/5/24 - Neurons and Neural Communication - Neuron simulation activity: modeling neuron firing using interactive simulations
Week of 13/5/24 - Brain Structure and Function - major structures and functions of the brain, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem
Week of 20/5/24 - Brain Structure and Function - Brain dissection demonstration: observing brain structures in preserved specimens or virtual dissection software
Week of 27/5/24 - Sensory Systems - sensory systems, including vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch
Week of 3/6/24 - Sensory Systems - sensory receptors, neural pathways, and perception
Week of 10/6/24 - Sensory Systems - Sensory perception activity: exploring sensory illusions and perceptual phenomena
Week of 17/6/24 - Motor Control and Movement - motor control systems, including the brain areas and pathways involved in movement
Week of 24/6/24 - Motor Control and Movement - reflexes, voluntary movements, and motor learning
Week of 1/7/24 - Motor Control and Movement - Motor control experiment: investigating reflexes and reaction times using simple motor tasks
Week of 8/7/24 - Memory and Learning - memory processes, including encoding, storage, and retrieval
Week of 15/7/24 - Memory and Learning - types of memory, including short-term, long-term, and working memory
Week of 22/7/24 - Memory and Learning - Memory experiment: conducting memory tests and exploring mnemonic techniques
Week of 29/7/24 - Emotions and Behavior - emotions, including their neural basis and regulation
Week of 5/8/24 - Emotions and Behavior - brain regions involved in emotional processing and mood disorders
Week of 12/8/24 - Emotions and Behavior - Emotion regulation activity: practicing emotion regulation strategies and mindfulness techniques
Week of 19/8/24 - Neuroplasticity and Brain Development - neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change and adapt
Week of 26/8/24 - Neuroplasticity and Brain Development - brain development across the lifespan, from infancy to old age
Week of 2/9/24 - Neuroplasticity and Brain Development - Brain training activity: engaging in cognitive exercises and brain teasers to promote neuroplasticity
Week of 9/9/24 - Brain Disorders and Neurological Conditions - neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy
Week of 16/9/24 - Brain Disorders and Neurological Conditions - causes, symptoms, and treatments of brain disorders
Week of 23/9/24 - Brain Disorders and Neurological Conditions - Patient perspective project: researching a neurological condition and presenting from the perspective of a patient or caregiver
Week of 30/9/24 - Neuroscience Careers and Research - careers in neuroscience, including neuroscientists, neurologists, and neuropsychologists
Week of 7/10/24 - Neuroscience Careers and Research - neuroscience research methods and techniques
Week of 14/10/24 - Neuroscience Careers and Research - Designing a research study or experiment related to neuroscience and presenting findings to the class
