In this 3 day course, students will learn about the Roman Numeral System, this includes identifying the following basic Roman Symbols: I, V, X, L, C and M). When students can identify the value of each symbol they will perform basic operations such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will start each class by taking notes and doing guided examples as a class. Once students have demonstrated comprehension through questioning and modeling they will work on independent practice problems. Day 1: Identify the basic Roman symbols and use them to write greater and lower numbers. They will also complete an assignment known as the "Roman Numerals Number Square." Day 2: Convert between Roman Numerals to numbers used in America and the World. Also students will arrange Roman Numerals in order from least to greatest. Day 3: Students will learn to multiply, divide, add and subtract Roman Numerals.
Roman numerals were more openly used many years ago but they are still used today in many forms. They are used in American Football specially during Super Bowl Season, they are also used to represent dates or numbers on a clock, etc... Learning to add, subtract, divide and multiply can help open doors to many jobs out there in the real world.
Students should come to class prepared with a notebook, pencils, attached assignments and a highlighter ready to take notes.
These are lessons that I have taught both in a public school with a class of 30 students and in private tutoring setting, and I have always been able to identify the misconceptions regarding this lesson. This helps me adjust the lesson to individual needs.
