Class Experience

This class is a one-time meeting. The topic for this listing is Chinese Pinyin. If you want to join a long-term program, please check out my other listings. The students will hear me speaking Chinese often, so they can start to immerse themselves in Chinese. For learners with no Chinese background, repetitive lessons and a higher frequency of meetings are suggested.
In this short lesson, we will learn Chinese Pinyin, which is the phonetic system for Chinese characters. We will learn simple finals, compound finals, initials, 4 tones, whole syllables and complete the class with short sentences.
Throughout the lesson, students will learn the Pinyin system, which is the base for absolute beginners. They will see their favorite characters, play games with each other, complete all the levels and make a paper purse upon the completion of the class.
No prior experience of Chinese necessary. This class is for beginners.
Learning Goals
Students will have a basic knowledge of Pinyin. They will know how to pronounce Chinese characters by reading pinyin.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Ruiyi. I’m a native Chinese speaker. I’ve lived in the U.S. for almost 9 years. I graduated with an MA degree in linguistics. I have taught at FAU for two years as a teacher assistant. I’ve taught at a high school, as well as several language schools. I'm currently teaching Chinese for two programs including the LEAP program with the Air Force and the VFLC program with the National Defense Department. Meanwhile, I'm teaching for after-school programs and high school credit programs for California school districts.

I believe that teaching classes in Chinese while incorporating hands-on activities, games, visual stimulations, and technology will facilitate language understanding and activate a higher level of thinking. I try my best to make language classes fun and encouraging. My goal for my classes with your children is to make language learning an enjoyable activity, rather than a chore.

All of my classes are immersion classes. It is at this stage that children learn pronunciation easily, and vocabulary sticks longer. Linguists do not recommend teaching young children a language since they will pick it up on their own. I will use repetition a lot in my classes. Children acquire the language by listening to me speak and repeat.
