In this class, learners will work on the basics of single-digit addition. Each week includes two lessons with a pre-recorded video from Ms. Brenda, games, and YouTube Videos to practice what we learned. Some lessons will also include practice worksheets. The work can be spread out over the week for maximum retention or done in a single day if your schedule is limited. Flexible classes work well for math because they allow each student to spend as much or as little time as she needs for the concepts to take hold. Students can watch Ms. Brenda's video for each lesson, try out what they learned with games, and discuss the problems and ask Ms. Brenda questions in the Outschool classroom. **Lesson One** Ms. Brenda talks about addition. We will learn vocabulary like "sum", "total", and "all together". Next, we will look at the number zero and its meaning in mathematics. We will practice adding nothing. Finally, we will add 1 and look at counting up. **Lesson Two** We'll review +0 and +1 and then count up to add 2. Ms. Brenda will give you some math problems to practice. Finally, we will play a game to drill math facts. **Lesson Three** This week we'll continue counting up. We will add with pictures and digital manipulatives and start to work on adding 3 and 4. Practice and Repetition will be key. We want this to "click". **Lesson Four** This week we will add 5 and 6. There will be lots of games to play and we will keep practicing counting up. **Lesson Five** This week we will add 7 and 8. We will continue to look at counting up and Ms. Brenda will teach some strategies to make counting up easier when the numbers get higher. **Lesson Six** This week we will learn to add 9 and 10. We will also work on a lot of math drills and students will have the chance to create their own addition problems in the classroom discussion and then have the whole class solve them. **Lesson Seven** Adding with a ten frame. Ms. Brenda's video this week will show to use ten frames to add to ten. Adding with a ten frame early will build a solid foundation for carrying and borrowing in more advanced math. **Lesson Eight** Adding with a number line. Nothing shows what numbers really mean and their relationships to one another like a number line. Ms. Brenda will show everyone how to count up using a number line.
Students will gain a solid foundation with simple addition. The goal of this class is for all students to be comfortable adding single-digit numbers to each other and add single digits to ten. Students will see how to add with manipulatives, ten frames, and number lines. They will also practice drills for rote memorization.
Students will need lined paper and a pencil.
Hi! I'm Brenda and I'm a homeschool mom, an author, a swim instructor, and a really big nerd. I love stories. I like books, movies, and games. I love to learn about EVERYTHING! Some of my favorite things to learn about are math, dinosaurs, the Ancient Greeks, explosions, and world religions. I wish real life was a musical and I may spontaneously break into song.
My degree is in Theatre Arts with a minor in Psychology.
I believe everyone should be treated with kindness and respect. I also believe that we learn best when we are excited about what we are learning.
My favorite books are Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, my favorite movies are Independence Day and Fiddler on the Roof, and my favorite TV shows are MASH, Phineas and Ferb, and Firefly.
