Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
This class has a FLEX schedule, meaning that this class will not meet for live sections. Instead, it will "meet" through posts on the Outschool platform. Posts in the classroom will include pre-recorded lessons, announcements, assignments, and communication between the teacher and parent/learner. Depending on your learner's level/skills parent involvement in the class postings might be needed.
This is a class for learners who are just being introduced to their letters/phonics or need a review to master the concepts.
This FLEX class will be scheduled over 4 weeks. At the start of each week, I will post a prerecorded video lesson, that will be around 30-45 minutes in length. This lesson will introduce the learners to an interactive phonics program.
Each week/video I will introduce around 7 new letters until we have covered the entire alphabet. Each letter will be connected to a particular character and we will use songs about these letters/characters to enhance learning. Even though the classes are prerecorded, it is very much interactive for your learner. They will be repeating sounds, singing songs, watching animations, doing action tricks and writing letters. I will also ask questions and have your learner find different items on the screen throughout each lesson. The variety of interactions with the fun characters will keep your child fully engaged and learning :)
I will introduce letters in a non-traditional order (not in alphabetical order) and more by how common they are used in short CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. This will help your child really learn the letters and not just memorize them.
For each letter, we will learn to recognize the letter, listen for the letter sound and practice forming the letter. We will only practice the lowercase form of the letters since that is more difficult and used more often. A short second video each week will be posted that really shows me writing the letters.
When focusing on the letter sound, I will ask the learners to search for items on the screen that start with that sound (b-ball, c-cake). At the end of each video, I will close class with a small activity/worksheet that focuses on one of the letters from that particular class. I will model the activity, but your learner will complete it after the video on their own time. There will be one assignment each week and you will have access to all of them directly after signup. These activities will vary from writing the letters, drawing the characters, drawing different things that begin with a specific letter. The assignments will help reinforce what we learned each week. They will have the opportunity to share these by posting a photo or video in the classroom. Midweek learners will go on a scavenger hunt to find items that begin with a letter sound taught that week. They can post their items to the classroom; then other learners can try to find that item too and share! I will also personally respond to all learner work through interactive videos.

You can have your learner explore and watch the other learners practicing their letter sounds for even more reinforcement. Young learners love to be on camera and to watch other young learners so this is a fun educational task, but will require some parental assistance :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught this class live on Outschool and it has been a hit, so I have decided to turn it into a flex version. I taught kindergarten and first grade for four years and online for three years. I try to make learning fun and in a way for your child to be introduced to letters/phonics where they can relate and remember what they are learning. They quickly will be singing the songs and identifying characters. I also try to form a connection with your learner.
