Class Experience

Beginner Level
This class is geared towards novices and beginners looking to learn or improve at chess. The topics covered with each student will be tailored, taking into consideration any existing chess knowledge that the student may already possess. The goal is to provide the best educational value during the time spent in class. Generally, some of the topics that can be covered include chess notation and learning how to identify the squares on the chessboard; the different pieces and how they move; tactics such as forks, pins and sacrifices to gain an advantage in the middle game; and standard checkmating patterns to help seal the win in the endgame (e.g. with a king and queen versus an opponent who only has a king remaining). Our interactive sessions will feature The Zoom and Lichess platforms with screen sharing to go over the material, demonstrate examples, and provide practice problems. I believe that practice makes perfect, and my sessions will have plenty of exercises- shared in the chat through Lichess links- for students to open and apply their knowledge with. Feedback and support will be provided as they go through the exercises. Doing so will make learning fun and simple as students work towards their objectives while mastering the key concepts required along the way
