Let's Do This Pre-Algebra Style: Solve Two-Step Equations and Inequalities
Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
I will provide students with the notes, examples, activities and directions needed to seamlessly follow through each lesson. Students will be encouraged to take notes as they move through the lessons as this will help them understand the examples and complete the puzzles, and I will respond to any questions that may be posted via Outschool messages. There will be 9 lessons total, with each lesson being posted on Sundays by 12 noon (Eastern Standard Time) for families that opt for weekly...
9 lessons//9 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Solving Two-Step Equations (positive integers only)Students will use inverse operations to solve two-step equations.Week 2Lesson 2Solving Two-Step Equations (word problems)Students will identify key terms in a problem in order to set up and solve the equation.Week 3Lesson 3Solving Two-Step Inequalities (graphing included)Students will use inverse operations to solve the inequalities, then graph the solutions on a number line.Week 4Lesson 4Solving Equations by Combining Like TermsStudents will identify and combine like terms in order to find the solution to an equation.Week 5Lesson 5Solving Systems of Equations using the Addition MethodStudents will identify and combine like terms in order to find the solution to an equation.Week 6Lesson 6Solving Systems of Equations using the Addition MethodStudents will identify and combine like terms in order to find the solution to an equation.Week 7Lesson 7Solving Equations Using the Distributive PropertyStudents will distribute terms in order to simplify and solve an equation.Week 8Lesson 8Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides of the Equal SignStudents will identify and combine like terms in order to find the solution to an equation.Week 9Lesson 9Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides of the Equal SignStudents will identify and combine like terms in order to find the solution to an equation.
- In this course, students will: -use mental math to solve puzzles -use inverse operations to solve equations and inequalities -add, subtract, multiply and divide with negative integers -graph solutions to inequalities
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics as well as a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in STEM. I have created and collected a wide variety of resources to help students engage in a fun and comfortable way while building a strong foundation in mathematics. With 20 years of experience teaching in the classroom coupled with 5+ years of experience teaching online to students with varying abilities and needs, I feel extremely qualified to deliver this instruction to learners via Outschool.
Homework Offered
Homework will be to complete the activities of each lesson prior to beginning the next lesson.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will have the option of submitting work to the classroom for feedback. For certain lessons, a decoder puzzle will be attached, and students will know that they are on the right track by correctly solving the puzzle.Grades Offered
It would be nice for students to have a three-ring binder in order to keep track of assignments and notes each week. I will provide a PDF via Outschool messages that will explain to students what needs to be for the week (objective, discussion question, notes and assessment). A calculator and graph paper would be nice items to have, however, when possible, I will suggest websites that may have the tools that a learner may need (example: online calculators).
