Class Experience

Class Description:

This class is a lecture, demonstration and practice course in which students will learn how to create both the Skeleton and Sugar skull makeup design. We will focus on learning technical makeup skills and creating design choices while creating these looks. Students will gain basic knowledge of a visual look of the skull. They will also get familiar with the basics of creating decorative patterns and shapes.

Students will learn the makeup application process from provided materials, recorded videos, and live tutorials. During these latter, synchronous tutorials, the instructor will lead students through the process of applying makeup and provide real-time feedback.

Teaching Style:

Picasso once said, “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Teaching enables me to remain an artist, rediscovering new ways to be passionate about theater and art. My teaching philosophy is that all students must have a stimulating creative environment that will foster their artistic, creative, social, and intellectual growth. I approach each student individually by celebrating their specific point of view. In a safe, process-based environment I invite my students to learn through experimentation, share their ideas and discover the joy of creating art. I want to help students feel comfortable unlocking their creative voices and developing their talents.
When I teach a Stage Makeup class, in addition to teaching students the basic techniques, I come up with creative assignments that empower students to focus on design, story and character development. The assignments that I create include lessons that emphasize mastering technical skills with an innovative approach to the design.
The critical thinking and design skills that I teach my students may transfer to a variety of professions, such as costume design for theatre and film, fashion, illustration, craft making and so on. I have worked in theatres of different sizes, and I have worked in other design-related professions, such as film, fashion, jewelry making and illustration. As a result, I am able to share my first-hand experience that can help students consider various opportunities and discover the joy of creating art.
My goal is to create a class that is never one-note or repetitive, but rather collaborative, interactive and dynamic. I want every student to have a meaningful experience in my class. Watching students learn to discover and create with the help of my guidance inspires me a lot. For me learning never ends- as much as students learn from me, I am also the one who learns from them all the time. Being an artist and teacher is not just a profession for me, it is a way of life! Thank you for reading and I hope to see you in some of my classes!

In this class we will create skull inspired makeup looks. Even though we will not look at real skeleton images, some of the makeup design imagery that we will use in this class could potentially be scary for some of the students.
