This class is recommended for students who have taken my class "Meet the Adorable Axolotl," or have a general understanding of what axolotls are. Also note that students are expected to remain on camera during this class. In this one-time class, we will begin with game of Kahoot! to see what we already know about axolotls. We will then have a question and answer session. Each child will be given the opportunity to ask at least two questions. Next we will have time for each student to share what they know, like, or otherwise want to say about axolotls. I will assess how long each student will be allowed to share based on the number of students in the class. The time will be divided equally. Students are encouraged to respond to each other, and I will ask guiding questions to facilitate this. We will use active listening skills! If at any time the class begins to lag or students become hesitant to talk, I will ask thought provoking questions. I will share my screen to show pictures of axolotls as they pertain to our conversations. This class is informal and casual. There will not be a prepared slide show or presentation. My style is friendly yet professional, and I value the contributions of each student. We will focus on listening actively and politely as well as extending our knowledge and understanding of axolotls. Each student should come prepared to participate in this class with their cameras on and ideas ready. I can't wait to hear what everyone brings to this class! In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Alabama Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Auburn University
I've been studying science all my life. My father was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association.
In my classes, we adhere to the consensus of the scientific community regarding deep time, evolution, and climate change. I refer frequently to "breeding," and other terms associated with reproduction in animals in a frank and straightforward way.
I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
