In this one-time class, students will listen to a book about lakes and we will discuss things we see near the water. Then we will make boats that the students will "set sail" on water! We will also talk about forces and “sinking” and “floating.”

Class experience

Students will learn about what makes boats move faster and slower. They will also learn what it means to "sink" and "float."
I have almost 14 years experience teaching elementary children and I have 3 young children of my own.
If your child would like to make a boat, we will be using these supplies:

1) container of water to float your boat in (big enough for your boats to float around in)
2) 1-2 pieces of square Styrofoam (it's best to be at least 1/2 inch thick) OR 1 apple (I will demonstrate in class how to cut it so please have a parent nearby during this part of our lesson if you are going to make a boat)
3) colored construction paper
4) markers/crayons
5) scissors
6) wooden skewers (cut down to around 6 inches long) OR toothpicks OR 2-3 sharpened pencils (toothpicks/wooden skewers work best with the apple)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents are encouraged to be close to students during the craft part of this lesson to help as needed.
