 Week 1
Lesson 1
What does it mean to subtract?
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract within 20 • The definition of subtraction • What is means to subtract two numbers • How to write mathematical equations for subtraction models
Lesson 2
What does it mean to subtract?
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract within 20 • The definition of subtraction • What is means to subtract two numbers • How to write mathematical equations for subtraction models
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Ten Frames Subtraction Within 20
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract within 20 Modeling the subtraction of numbers within twenty allows students to combine early number skills such as one-to-one correspondence with the understanding of less than and more than. This fosters the ability to perform mental math with regard to sets of ten as they grow more proficient. Repeated subtraction helps students find solutions in division.
Lesson 4
Ten Frames Subtraction Within 20
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract within 20 Modeling the subtraction of numbers within twenty allows students to combine early number skills such as one-to-one correspondence with the understanding of less than and more than. This fosters the ability to perform mental math with regard to sets of ten as they grow more proficient. Repeated subtraction helps students find solutions in division.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Missing Term Subtraction
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract numbers within 20 • How to find the missing term in subtraction problems Students need to understand the relationship between numerical operations. The ability to utilize addition strategies to find solutions to subtraction problems, and vice versa, leads to the development of invented strategies, which help students later with mental math and fact recall.
Lesson 6
Missing Term Subtraction
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract numbers within 20 • How to find the missing term in subtraction problems Students need to understand the relationship between numerical operations. The ability to utilize addition strategies to find solutions to subtraction problems, and vice versa, leads to the development of invented strategies, which help students later with mental math and fact recall.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Decomposing Numbers/Place Value
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract using decomposing Using decomposing strategies to subtract helps students make a connection to the role of base ten in the number system.
Lesson 8
Decomposing Numbers/Place Value
Students will learn/discover: • How to subtract using decomposing Using decomposing strategies to subtract helps students make a connection to the role of base ten in the number system.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Result Unknown Problems Within 20
Students will learn/discover: • How to represent and solve subtraction problems that are missing the difference • How to write mathematical equations for models
Lesson 10
Result Unknown Problems Within 20

Assessment
Frequency: included
Details: Parents may request evaluation feedback on learner participation and demonstration of understanding. These points will be evaluated through class participation.
To successfully participate in class, learners will need a student workbook to utilize throughout the semester. Parents have the option to purchase the book printed or purchase a PDF download and print it at home.

Printed workbook:

PDF workbook to be printed at home:
https://www.brickmathseries.com/store/p25/Subtraction_Using_LEGO%C2%AE_Bricks%E2%80%94Student_Edition_%28PDF%29.html

Learners will need an assortment of bricks each week in class. Brick Math sells a kit that is complete with the full variety of options needed for the activities in class. There’s an option to purchase that here:
https://www.brickmathseries.com/store/p17/brick-set.html

However, we will also let you know weekly which bricks we’ll be using in class, so you learner can pull from their current stash if that’s preferred.

All learners will need a baseplate for their work surface. If you purchase the kit, it will come with it. If you plan to use bricks from home, please ensure you have a baseplate that is at least 6”x6”. Something like this is ideal:
