Learning to Subtract Fractions With a Certified Teacher

In this one time class we will practice subtracting fractions that have the same denominator and putting the answer in simplest form.  

Students will start out using virtual fraction strips so they can see how the subtraction works, which will lead to using subtraction sentences to determine the correct difference.

I will teach using the gradual release of responsibility method (I do, we do, you do) so students develop independence and confidence in the process and their skills.

Throughout our session we will:
-Write subtraction equations to represent real-world situations
-Use visuals (virtual fraction strips) to model and solve the equations
-Subtract fractions with the same denominator using numbers and symbols
-Put fractions in simplest terms
-Change improper fractions to mixed numbers
-Review vocabulary including numerator, denominator, simplify etc.

My lessons are student centered and student involved.  I keep things interactive and fun.  My goal is that your student enjoys learning and the environment is positive.   Even small successes are celebrated and mistakes are treated as learning opportunities  I hope that students will grow in their confidence, as well as their skills.
