Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
This class is all about the American Girl Doll Addy Walker! In this 3 week class, students will learn about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. I will introduce the students to Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. We will also discuss what Addy's life was like in Philadelphia after her and Momma found freedom. The students do not have to pre-read the books before class, but they can if they wish! On week #2, we will make make salt-dough bread for our dolls! (Just like Addy used, to teach her mother how to read!) The student can make biscuits, a braided loaf, or even letters like Addy did! For homework, the child can bake the salt-dough and bring it to class for the last week! We will spend time in the last class painting and decorating our bread!

*Note that there is homework to bake the salt dough between weeks two and three.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to explain the Civil War, the underground railroad, and what life was like as a free slave in 1864.
