Class Experience

**Please note: This course can be taken BEFORE "version one" and does not require the skill set or words learned in version one. It is recommended however that students who have already taken "version one" then enroll in "version two" to continue the course. Students who finish "version two" can then enroll in "version one" to continue the course, as the roots and words will be different in both courses.

--In this course, students will learn many different Greek and Latin root words with associated vocabulary specific to grades 4-8 to help develop strong reading comprehension abilities. Learning root words is an important opportunity for students to decode unknown or unfamiliar words and build comprehension at the same time. Knowledge of prefixes and suffixes help students be able to dissect the meaning of words, including words with several syllables in a way that makes meaning and strengthens their skills in other subject areas. Knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes transcends just English Language Arts and helps students with understanding content taught in social studies, science, math, health, and more.

Our live meeting will take place every Friday, where we will learn and discuss new Greek and Latin root words assigned for the upcoming week, as well as review the root words and definitions from the previous week by playing a Kahoot or similar review game.

Every Friday morning before class begins I will post the "root word of the week" handout guide, which will include ten different vocabulary words and their definitions associated with the root word we will be studying that students will be learning in our live class. (For example, if we are studying the word "ped" which means "foot," our ten vocabulary words will be related to feet in some way-- biped, pedicure, pedal, centipede, etc. that week.) I will also provide students with additional resources they can use to review the root words and vocabulary between our live sessions.

Students will be provided with a word list, study guide, and a link to a Quizlet review page for practicing which will be posted to the discussion board as optional resources to use and review (though not required). During our live class each week, we will review the Greek and Latin root words taught the previous week, play a Kahoot or similar game for quizzing and reinforcement, and then I will teach students ten new words and new Greek or Latin root word for review and optional practice the upcoming week. During our live classes, students will also share sentences and/or examples using the new and previously learned vocabulary words and will be encouraged to share times when they used or heard some of the words during the week for additional engagement.

Here is a sample schedule that will take place each Friday:

-(At least one hour before class): Mrs. Love will post the new root word of the week and our ten new vocabulary words we will be studying. Students are not expected to print out this list before class, but may want to scan or review ahead of time.
-Students join live class meeting on Fridays
-We review the previous week's vocabulary words together (students share sentences they wrote, I may briefly quiz them)
-We play a Kahoot or other game together for reviewing the past vocabulary words and root word
-I share 10 new vocabulary words and one new root word with students via Google slides, which will be the words we will focus on during the upcoming week
-Discussion/additional review
-Closure

I will provide parents with suggestions on how to practice and review the root words and associated vocabulary words with students during the week in a meaningful way. Each week I will post resources that students may use for studying and review, as these are optional resources that will enhance knowledge and understanding.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of Greek and Latin root words, build a strong vocabulary knowledge base, and be able to decipher the meaning of unknown words using the strategies, prefixes, suffixes, and roots that we learn throughout this ongoing class.

Hello!

My name is Mrs. Love, and I have been a middle school Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for the past ten years. Additionally, I have designed curriculum and taught several middle school elective classes, such as creative writing, advanced literature, newspaper, yearbook, and more. I have worked as an adjunct faculty member for the past two years as well in an elementary education teacher preparation program, teaching a variety of literacy and child development courses. My range and breadth of experience is K-12 literacy education, including teaching high school English in an online setting as well. On Outschool, I will be teaching a variety of courses such as creative writing for beginners, middle school novel studies, poetic storytelling, advanced creative writing, elementary book studies, elementary creative writing, and advanced writing and reading challenges. As an avid photographer in my free time, I will also be teaching classes on photojournalism at both the beginner and advanced levels.

My philosophy of education is that each student who enters my classroom has the same right as his or her peers to receive a high-quality education where they are known, cared for, and valued individually. In everything I do, I individualize my instruction as much as possible. Differentiation is not just a buzzword, it’s the anchor by which my classes are rooted. As a teacher, my desire is that my classes are places where students feel safe and where they look forward to entering each and every day.

One of the things that is most important to me is greeting each of my students by name when I see them, referring to them in respectful language, modeling integrity and fairness in my own actions, and showing compassion and empathy whenever possible. I want my students to know that I care about them, not just by my words but by my actions. This means that I make heart-based decisions to balance instinctive head-based decisions. I also listen to my students to find out what their needs are, and adapt and adjust if the situation warrants it. I want my students to be able to trust me as their teacher and leader, and trust takes time to build. Modeling, explaining, giving examples, telling stories, and making connections whenever possible are just some of the many ways that I focus on classroom culture and community at the heart of what I do.

I also believe in showing students how and why they are capable of achieving something. In many cases frustration and overwhelm may rise up when a student is faced with something that they don’t know how they can accomplish. I work hard to come alongside them and affirm to them how they can, why they can, and break things down step-by-step, making myself available for help whenever possible. No matter the age, my students need me to believe in them, and when they know that I do, their achievement is always much greater than when they first doubted themselves.

I also believe in creating lessons that are relevant, ones that shape outlooks on life, society, and important issues, and ones that are engaging and meaningful so that students can apply the lessons to their own lives. Whether it be a simulation, real-world projects to make a difference in the world and take action, or anything else that gives students choice and ownership, I strive to make that happen as much as possible.

Overall, as a teacher I believe it is my role to serve as mentor, facilitator, educator, coach, counselor, and advisor, and through that my philosophy of education has students at the center of it all, driving the activities we do, the lessons I teach, and the community and culture of the classroom as a whole.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring national parks and trails with my husband and five year old son, cooking, playing the piano, writing, reading, and traveling as often as possible!
