Learning From the Periodic Table (Part 3 in the "Intro to Chemistry" Series)

We will color a copy of the periodic table to highlight the different physical and chemical properties of the Periodic Table. Students will then learn how to use this tool to identify characteristics of different atoms.

Class Experience

Beginner Level
The "Intro to Chem" Series is a series of one time classes that covers the basic topics of Chemistry. The first class is "Matter; its all around", the second class is "The Amazing Atom", and the third class is "Learning From the Periodic Table". These classes can be taken in any order but will provide students with a foundation for their future study of Chemistry.

Here, in this class, we will discover the basics of what the periodic has to teach us; which is a lot more than we think! From reviewing the atomic number and atomic mass to determining the characteristics of each atom based on its placement on the table; this class will cover it all.

Students will be receiving their own copy of the periodic table which they will use to color different characteristics and make a reference tool for future use in chemistry courses. When we're finished we'll practice how to use the information on the periodic table to describe elements and their characteristics. Students will leave with a good understanding of the things the periodic table can tell us and why we have it.

Please Note: Students should already know how to count Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons and be familiar with how to identify the Atomic Number and the Atomic Mass. If they don't already, then please consider taking my "Amazing Atoms" class before this one.
Learning Goals
Students will learn:
1.) How and why the Periodic Table was formed.
2.) The "Pattern" to the Periodic table.
3.) How to identify families on the Periodic Table.
4.) The basic characteristics of each family on the Periodic Table.
5.) How to identify Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids on the periodic table, as well as their basic characteristics.
6.) How to determine the characteristics of each atom using the periodic table.
7.)Understanding of basic trends seen across the periodic table (i.e. reactivity, mass, size, predictability, etc.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Jennessa Vullo and I teach a wide range of "middle school" science classes. I am a stay-at-home mom to 3 beautiful boys and LOVE teaching science!

I have a Bachelor's degree in Life Science Education from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and am a certified teacher in North Carolina. I taught general middle school science in a public school for 8 years. About 4 years ago, I turned into a homeschooling mom who taught preschool during the day, and Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes at night. After two years of that, I changed my focus to teaching a few online ESL classes to elementary-aged students while still homeschooling my son. However, my interest, desire, and passion lie with the sciences and middle-school-aged students. So, now I am teaching through Outschool!

The biggest question learners have, whether intentional or not, is "Why do I need to know this?" Therefore, I set out to answer that question with every lesson I teach. From online labs to open discussions, we will explore various science topics in a way that allows learners to not only learn the material but also understand why science is so important to their everyday lives. Hopefully, inspiring the next generation of scientists!

I believe through the right type of learning tools and the right teacher relationship, students can understand any topic and succeed. And, as I do with my children, I desire to foster the love of learning so that students become lifelong learners; ready to tackle any challenge life has for them. I look forward to working with both students and parents to create a partnership that helps achieve your family's goals.
