Class Experience

Learning long vowel sounds and their many spellings is critical to solving the reading puzzle! In this week long course, the following sounds/patterns will be taught:

-Day 1: Long a spelled a, ay, ea, ei, and ey.
-Day 2: Long e spelled e, ea, ee, ie, y, and ey.
-Day 3: Long i spelled i, y, igh, and ie.
-Day 4: Long o spelled o, oa, ow, and oe.
-Day 5: Long u spelled u_e, ew, ue, and u.

Each lesson will include the critical components to reading success: phonemic awareness (can your child hear the sound), direct instruction of phonics skill, modeling and practicing reading words with the day's sound/patterns, writing words with day's sound/patterns, and finishing by reading a passage that has many words with the day's sound/patterns. My learners will interact with me through slides, video clips, responding to questions/discussion, and by showing their answer (a writing tool and place to write are needed). Students that attend this course should be able to identify all letters and consonant/short vowel sounds. I make it fun by including movement and singing!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify the long a, e, i, o, and u sounds by reading and writing words with these sounds.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! I am a second grade teacher that is blessed to teach all major subject areas! Variety is the spice of life, and I like my job to be extra spicy by getting to teach reading, math, writing, social studies, and science!

The most important thing to do while learning is to have fun! To make learning fun I incorporate Legos, cartoons (Scooby is my favorite!), dancing, singing, and all around silliness! I have developed several courses through Outschool that incorporate these fun things! I do have extensive experience with curriculum development, lesson planning, and behavior management and make sure to intertwine strong teaching practices with the fun.

On a personal note, I have been a second grade teacher at a Title One school in Eastern Baltimore County for 18 years. I have my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and master's degree in Elementary Reading and Math. I have also continued my learning (I told you I love learning!) and completed 60 credits of post graduate learning in elementary education. I also teach online courses to other teachers through Goucher College in Baltimore.

In my free time I love spending time with my family, which includes my husband Jason, and two sons Caleb and Blake. I have three rescue chihuahuas named Flick, Reese, and Dolly that bring me so much joy!
