Students will enjoy making an eye-catching hexaflexagon (tri-hexaflexagon) puzzle craft while learning basic geometry and artistic principles in this STEM/STEAM-inspired class. This class will be taught using Google Slides, video clips, discussion, and hands-on learning. We will cover basic geometry by looking at and exploring the properties of a hexagon, we will also cover design and artistic principles as well as the history of the hexaflexagon. I will give a brief history of the hexaflexagon, discuss design principles to be considered when decorating the puzzle, and show examples of completed designs. I will then walk through the process of creating a hexaflexagon step-by-step and provide feedback to each student as we progress through the class. I will also be offering more advanced versions in other classes- check back, or "heart" my profile to stay current on my class offerings. This simple process uses household items that you likely have at home, but it yields a mind-blowing, and educational, puzzle craft! No experience is needed.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of geometry and the terms that are used to describe geometric shapes, while also learning more about design and art principles. Students will also grow their creative problem-solving skills, as well as their hand-eye skills and their communication skills.

Hi! My name is Laurie Bloyer, and I have been a teacher for over 20 years.
I look forward to teaching your child the essential life skills that they will need for success in life. These skills include problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, communication, and perseverance just to name a few. These are some of the qualities your child will explore while having fun in my engaging and exploratory STEAM design thinking/maker classes. Children love working with their hands and the combination of the maker movement with STEM activities is a great way for children to learn the skills they need for a lifetime, and take pride and ownership of their learning.
I began teaching as a Waldorf preschool teacher, working in southern California. I then moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to start a Waldorf preschool before deciding to travel to Central America, where I started an English school in Costa Rica. I came back to the US to live closer to my family when I had my son, Isaac. During this time, the maker movement started to boom, and I fell in love with making. I took one year off from the "regular" school to create a Makerspace (Invention Dimenstion) in Albuquerque, New Mexico (which was an idea ahead of its time). I returned to the school to teach Middle School and High School students Design Thinking, Art, and Technology. I have enjoyed teaching the mash-up of project-based, hands-on art and technology to all ages (PK-12th grade). and I look forward to teaching your child these lifelong essential skills as well!
I love learning and have a BA in Art and Psychology, one Master's in Waldorf education, and the second Master's in Instructional Design and Technology. I am constantly taking classes and attending workshops and conferences to learn more and stay current with the latest trends (though vintage isn't bad either). Personally, I was born in Colorado but have lived in Albuquerque. for the majority of my life. I did bounce around the US living on each coast, and I have traveled worldwide quite a bit. I have an 11 year old son who LOVES Outschool and a cat who LOVES to purr.
Please know that I will take care of your child while they are in my class, and I promise to make learning fun!
