This course is a fun entry point to the rich field of Egyptology! We will learn the hieroglyph script, write our names in hieroglyphs and translate King Tut's name by looking at artifacts from his tomb.

The language of the Ancient Egyptians has been a source of fascination for millennia, but how can an interested student begin to learn such a difficult subject? This course will provide an entry point to the rich field of Egyptology by looking at hieroglyphs and why/how they were used. Students will quickly learn to read and write Egyptian Hieroglyphs on their own by following along as the teacher demonstrates techniques to write/draw hieroglyphs.
Learning Goals
In this class, we will learn about the hieroglyph alphabet, logograms, and determinatives (do not worry, I will explain what those are!). Students will quickly learn to read and write Egyptian Hieroglyphs on their own by following along as the teacher demonstrates techniques to write/draw hieroglyphs. Students will then write their names during class. At the end of this class, we will also look at several artifacts found in King Tutankhamun's tomb and be able to translate his name on these artifacts!

Supply List
I provide several links to free resources which should be printed out by the student/parent before class. The student will also need a pen and paper to write the hieroglyphs. Ancient Egyptians would have used brushes while writing, so I have found it is easier to practice with a felt tip pen instead of just a regular pen/pencil. We want to see a bit of movement in our hieroglyphs!
