Class Experience

Sight words/high-frequency words are one of the foundational skills needed for beginner readers to master. Sight words/high-frequency words are in 50-70% of text that students will read! Knowing these words by "sight" will decrease their effort in decoding, and increase their comprehension (understanding) of the overall text. This course is excellent for those who are just learning to read!

Students should have already completed Set A and Set B before taking this class 3 (Set C). In this course (Set C), they will learn 20 words in 4 weeks! After completing this course, and the other two, students will have learned 87 new words. This will give them a great start and the confidence needed for a beginner reader.

The lessons will be engaging and taught with enthusiasm! Google slides will be used as a visual, along with journals, drawing, sentence writing, spelling activities, Play-Doh (or legos, string, blocks--anything to create the words), and a variety of games! In every class, they will practice writing their sight words and using them in a sentence (either copied or made up). They will also practice spelling each sight word using letter tiles and/or magnetic letters. Students will have the opportunity to draw, trace, create their words (and pictures) using materials of their choice (crayons, glitter and glue, paint, markers, Play-Doh, etc.). Students will also read a variety of books (from Reading A-Z), and will be able to create their own story or book.

Also, after the initial greeting at the beginning of class, I will mute all students (depending on how many students are enrolled). During the lesson, I will call upon students individually, where they will be able to unmute themselves and read with me. When I ask everyone to read with me, they are to still read aloud but with the mute button on. This is to ensure that everyone can hear the words properly.

The following is a general outline of the words that will be learned each week and the book read with it from Reading A-Z, the author of all the books is Bill Dinardo:

Week 1: where, help, how, when, than
   -Book 1: "Where Is It?"
-Book 2: "How Many Do You See?"

Week 2: too, little, so, who, ours, us
-Book 3: "Too Little, Too Big"
   -Book 4: "Who Has It?"

Week 3: were, three, an, funny, about, jump, run
   -Book 5: "There Were Three"
   -Book 6: "Jump On"

Week 4: brown, four, review words
   -Book 7: "One, Not Two"
-Book 8: "He Will Not Jump"
-Book 9: "Who Will Help Me?

I am a mother of a 5 year old and almost 3 year old and understand the importance of teaching the foundational skills of reading at an early age! Foundational skills are critical to set the stage for future success in reading, and that is why I offer a sight words class! With over 8 years of teaching experience in elementary education, teaching in public schools, I have found that when students know these sight words, it dramatically increases their confidence and comprehension.

My lessons are fun and engaging and I look forward to working with you and your child!
