US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Does your learner know most of the letter names and sounds? Are they ready to begin learning how to read? Great news! This class is designed to help build their reading confidence by utilizing phonics to assist them in learning to read. Phonics instruction aids in the comprehension of text by enabling the learner to decode words. As learners are capable of decoding words, they can recognize more words, enhancing their reading fluency. When readers can read fluently, it improves their reading comprehension because they are not struggling with decoding words and can concentrate on understanding the text. Furthermore, phonics instruction enhances spelling abilities because it emphasizes spelling patterns that emerge from reading. Although not all English words can be spelled and read using phonics, studies have shown that half of all English words can be spelled with phonics rules relating to one letter to one sound. This class focuses on short vowel sounds as the first level, with eight different lessons. Learners can join and complete the lessons in any order. Once they complete all eight lessons, they may move on to Level 2. A total of four levels are available, and this class is appropriate for learners at a high Kindergarten/First grade level. If your learner is younger, unfamiliar with many letter sounds, or has trouble putting sounds together, they may benefit from my Get Ready to Read: Phonemic Awareness Class, which is accessible here: https://outschool.com/classes/get-ready-to-read-phonemic-awareness-gmDX97ex?usid=LYKWI4g2&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link. If your learner can already read short vowel words and is ready to learn long vowel patterns, you may enroll in my Level 2 class here: https://outschool.com/classes/learn-to-read-with-phonics-level-2-long-vowels-qL7yhfD9?usid=LYKWI4g2&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link. Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from State University of New York at Fredonia
Hi there! My name is Ms. Amanda and I am an experienced online teacher with a background in childhood education and Spanish. After graduating from the State University of New York at Fredonia, I taught first grade in Arizona for two years before moving to North Carolina to open a business with my husband. In North Carolina, I taught GED and ESL classes at a community college and first grade for two more years.
Despite my love for teaching in the traditional classroom setting, once my son was born, I decided to stay home and pursue my passion for teaching online. Since then, I have been staying at home with my two young children while teaching online classes with OutSchool and teaching ESL classes to children in China. I also worked as a content producer for a children's literacy app.
I have a passion for helping children learn how to read, which is a crucial foundation for lifelong learning. As an educator, I believe in instilling a growth mindset in my students, where they are encouraged to embrace challenges, learn from their mistakes, and ultimately reach their full potential. I look forward to working with your child to help them develop their skills and build their confidence in the classroom and beyond.
