Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2

Beginner - Intermediate Level

This class is quick paced and each lesson builds on previous lessons.  Each lesson is taught over 2-3 classes and contains the following skills/activities;

*blending letter sounds (reading)
*segmenting letter sounds (spelling)
*new phonics concepts
*practicing the new concept (and previously taught concepts) in the context of reading words/sentences/stories and spelling words/sentences
*reviewing previously taught concepts for retention

I like to keep things lighthearted and positive.  There is a place for making errors and risk-taking.  We learn from our mistakes.  I create a caring atmosphere for children to feel comfortable as they are learning.  There is lots of practice and some games.  

I provide take-home activities and a story upon completion of each lesson.

Parental Guidance

I’ll be using YouTube videos to support learning. There is no scary or inappropriate content.

Pre-Requisites

This class is for students who know most of the letter sounds.

Preferred material:
Small lined whiteboard (9x12, $6.81 on Amazon)
Black Dry erase marker
*plain white paper with a dark colored marker will do if you don’t have the above material

I worked closely with the classroom teachers and we found it to be highly effective with all students but especially with those students who needed intervention.  I have taught for over 10 years.
