US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
When learning to read is fun, kids don't just LEARN to read, they learn to LOVE to read! In this class, we will sing songs, play games, and complete fun activities as kiddos develop their reading skills. While the kids are having a blast in class, here are the skills that they will be working on: • The Alphabetic Principle: We learn the relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. • Phonological Awareness: We take those sounds and start arranging and rearranging them, learning the different ways that they fit together. We work on rhyming, clapping out syllables, and recognizing initial letter sounds in words. • Print Awareness: We read books as we learn how print is organized (e.g., we read from left to right, top to bottom). • Sight Words: We talk about and practice words that are best identified quickly, without being sounded out. • CVC Words: We take the letter sounds (phonemes) that we know and put them together in the order, consonant-vowel-consonant, as we begin to read basic words. To get an idea of how we build from individual letter sounds to whole words, check out this set of 7 weeks: • Week 1: Letter Tt and sight word, "a" • Week 2: Letter Ff and sight word, "the" • Week 3: Letter Pp and sight word, "see" • Week 4: Letter Mm and sight word, "I" • Week 5: Letter Cc and sight word, "look" • Week 6: Letter Aa and sight word, "at" • Week 7: at Family Words Once we have these letters and sight words under our belt, not only are we able to put our skills to use and read words such as, "cat," "mat," and "pat," but we are also able to read full sentences, like, "I see a mat, or "I look at the cat."

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is Mr. Mike and I'm an Early Childhood Educator. What does that mean, specifically? I have my Bachelor's in Psychology, my Master's in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, and my Teaching Certifications in both Students with Disabilities and Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2). The special education components of my background have uniquely shaped my philosophy of education in that I truly believe that every single child is a unique individual, with their own specific needs and learning style. My training has taught me how to incorporate all of those kiddos' different needs into one cohesive fun and successful learning experience!
My teaching background includes teaching full classrooms, smalls groups, and individual tutoring in person. It also includes online teaching through both live classes (which I have been doing for over 3 years) and pre-recorded videos (which I have been doing for even longer).
In addition to teaching, I am also a children's entertainer. I have recorded children's music albums and have performed live at preschools, libraries, birthday parties, and festivals. I'm also in the process of working on my first picture book.
I can't wait to see your kiddos in class!
