Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
This class will help prepare young musicians to play a musical instrument or sing in a choir. Students will learn how to recognize treble clef notes on a music staff, how long to hold those notes, and how fast and loudly to play them.

As we progress through the fun of learning, we will play easy songs like Hot Cross Buns and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. We’ll even talk about the composers of those songs, where they lived, and what they looked like.

Each learner will need a simple, inexpensive electronic keyboard or xylophone on which to practice the notes and play their songs. These can be purchased for $25 or less. (No wind instruments, please.)

1 (Nov. 18) - We will discuss the rules for class interaction, the music staff, and acronyms for note names.

2 (Nov. 25) - We will introduce the home of each note on the staff and practice recognizing them by using our acronyms. We will also learn the position of those notes on their instruments.

3 (Dec. 2) - We will practice recognizing our notes using flash cards, learn the length value of quarter notes, half notes and whole notes, and learn to play our first song.

4 (Dec. 9) - We will review recognizing our notes using flash cards and note length values. We will practice our last song and learn a new one.

5 (Dec. 16) - In this class we will introduce tempos (how fast we play a song), and dynamics (how loudly we play a song). We will practice these concepts using the songs we have already learned.

6 (Dec. 23) - In our final class we will learn and practice one last song.
