Class Experience

In our small group reading tutoring session, we will focus on reading skills that beginning readers need. Our classes will include a variety of work with a focus on two of the five areas of reading: phonics and phonemic awareness. The other three areas (vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) may be included. The reason for this is that these two elements are foundational in order for the other skills to be mastered.

This will be the content of our class: short vowel sounds review, phonemic awareness practice, reading words with the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) pattern, and reading sentences or short texts with these patterns. Additional activities may include rereading for improved fluency and practice reading high-frequency words. This small-group is ideal for students that already know their letter sounds and are at the CVC stage and starting to put these sounds together to read words with this pattern.

*I also offer a variety of private tutoring packages. Please search my other classes. If I have ones posted that are open for scheduling, please book what you would like. If you are interested in booking one of my packages that do not currently have classes posted for booking, please message me and we can schedule a package that will be what you are looking for.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Sarah King. I love teaching kids to read and helping them read to learn! I enjoy teaching anything that is reading related, including the areas of comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling and vocabulary. I also like teaching writing and social studies. On Outschool, I mostly do individual reading tutoring and I enjoy it so much! I enjoy getting to know my learners and helping them to grow as readers, as well as increasing their confidence and interest in reading. I also have a couple second grade reading and math camps that are fun to teach, as well as a few other interest-based summer camps. I appreciate Outschool because this platform has helped me with making connections with so many wonderful children and families from all over the United States, as well as other countries around the world!

I have been an elementary teacher for 22 years. I was a second-grade teacher for 17 years and currently I am a fifth-grade teacher. My experience includes teaching all subjects, but I am now a departmentalized teacher and teach reading and writing. I also have experience teaching online ESL (English as a Second Language). I have my master's degree in education and I am a certified K-8 teacher in the state of Maine.

I love learning and passing on this love of learning to my students. Learning is best when it is interactive, fun and engaging. I believe I am a patient, encouraging and especially an enthusiastic teacher. I love smiling and laughing with my students!

I am a mom and have two sons, ages 17 and 21. In my free time, I enjoy photography, reading, live music, yoga and taking my dogs on walks. I look forward to teaching your child!
