Greetings! In this course, students will learn about the base-20 number system used by the ancient Maya. By the end of the class, they will be able to read and write the numbers 0-20 (and beyond)! After class introductions, I will briefly spotlight the geography and time period of the classical Maya civilization, which took place roughly 250-1500 AD in parts of Mexico and Central America. We will then learn about the three symbols that represent the numbers zero, one, and five, which combine to make up all the numbers in the base-20 system. Together, we will practice combining these symbols to make the numbers 0-20. Finally, I will quiz students on their ability to recognize and write the numbers 0-20. If time allows, we can extrapolate this learning to numbers beyond 20. I teach through a sequence of short lecture and demonstration, examples that we practice together, and opportunities for students to try problems on their own and ask questions. I will include some slides, activities on Jamboard for students to practice forming numbers, and discussion. Prior knowledge needed: - the ability to add numbers to 20 - the ability to count by 5s Prior knowledge recommended: - the ability to multiply by 5s and 20s
