In this class we will sketch and draw the human face, as well as lead up practice lessons for the individual features of the face. We will learn at least one drawing technique as it relates to the subject. This class is for learners who love to draw people, especially faces. As an artist, I enjoy drawing faces because there is so much to learn but also because it allows me to explore emotions, personality and stories in my art.

This FLEX class contains six video lessons which build upon each other. The videos present the lesson in the form of a Google slide presentation (which includes art vocabulary, art technique and photo references {all original material created by instructor}), as well as recordings of the instructor drawing the subject matter. There will be additional opportunities for learners to reflect on their learning through online discussion, Nearpod vocabulary quizzes, and recorded feedback.

Some of the art terminology we will be learning include: shape, line, proportion, shading, and value (lights and darks). We will learn how to hold the pencil and discuss how to use the materials to achieve the effect we want in our drawings. We will also learn to apply a variety of pencil techniques to our sketches, including: shading, sketching, hatching, and cross-hatching. In the video presentation, the instructor will model the drawing process. The instructor may ask questions, model making mistakes, and make observations both about the photo reference and the drawing process. While students are encouraged to follow along with the instructor, they are also encouraged to implement their own drawing style and creative ideas.

The sequence of lessons is as follows:
Week 1: Eyes / Shape and Shading and Nose / Shape and Cross-Hatching
Week 2: Mouth / Contour Line and Shading and Hair / Shading and Texture
Lesson 5: Portrait / Shape and Proportion
Lesson 6: Portrait / Shape and Proportion

Please note that within this age range there will be a wide range of abilities. Some students may be working with the placement of simple shapes, whereas others may be familiar with proportion and shading. I strive to create a supportive classroom environment where all abilities are welcome. I will provide feedback for each drawing, however it will be tailored to the ability/level of the student. Feedback will be specific to art skills and techniques taught within the lesson, such as shape, proportion or shading.
Learning Goals
