Learn to Connect! Social Skills Coaching and Practice for Kids With Autism
I am a retired special education teacher with over 30 years of experience working with kids on the autism spectrum. In addition, I am a parent of a son with ASD. I am passionate about helping struggling kids to connect with one another.

We will practice social skills including how to introduce yourself, how to start a conversation, ways to join a conversation and how to end a conversation appropriately. We will practice asking questions to keep a conversation going, practice introducing topics of interest, emphasizing the importance of including background information so that others understand what we are talking about. We will practice ways to shift topics. We will work to develop awareness of when a conversation has become a monologue. Mostly our goal will be to enjoy getting to know one another and to become more skilled at connecting with others.

To increase awareness of social skills and to provide practice to work on those skills. That will look differently for each student.

Hi! My name is Cindy Kirtland and I have just recently retired from a career as a special education teacher for the past 38 years. For most of that time, I worked with kids with autism, and my favorite part of the school day was our daily social skills group. I have a BS in Education and an MA in Educational Psychology. I am passionate about helping kids who struggle with social skills learn how to engage with peers successfully. Topics we will work on include: Conversational skills, cooperative play skills, friendship management, self-regulation and conflict management.
