Class Experience

In this 25 minute class, students will learn more about how shapes such as ovals, rectangles, triangles, squares, and circles can be used to draw Pete the Cat! We will start off with talking a little bit about the shapes we know, refreshing our memories on shapes we don't know as well, and then read "Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes", looking for shapes in the story while we read! Next, we will learn how to draw Pete the Cat using different shapes. As we draw, we will discuss each shape that we draw. Students are welcome to bring items from their house that are in the shape of an oval, rectangle, triangle, square or circle. As we talk about each of these shapes, students will be invited to share their items that are that shape. By the end of class, students will have a drawing of Pete the Cat to keep! Students will have plenty of opportunity to interact by talking about Pete the Cat and shapes, by drawing shapes in the air and on paper, and actively looking for shapes while reading a story.
Learning Goals
Students will learn more about ovals, rectangles, triangles, squares, and circles. This includes being "Shape Detectives" by paying attention during the story to what shapes they can see and having an understanding of how shapes are used to make pictures of other things.

Supply List

If you have a set of shapes (oval, rectangle, triangle, circle, and square) that are wood/magnetic/felt/plastic, your child is welcome to bring those to class as well. They will have opportunity to use these during the "Shape Detective" time while reading the story.
