Class Experience

This class is intended for students interested in learning more about how the mind of a cartoonist works. And draw cartoons!

Visit with Cartoonist/Writer Raymond Mullikin, the creator of various Raytoons comic books and children's books, such as "Quackup" and "Raytoons Cartoon Avenue". He will show students how to create their own cartoon characters, working in a humorous "Sunday funnies" style. Students will discover the basic drawing techniques that make up a cartoon, including the different types of eyes, noses, ears, mouths, etc. They will be able to draw humorous, simplified faces and figures, cartoon animals, and more. Students will also get a digital comic book created by the cartoonist.

ITINERARY: 

【Day 1】
✔️  Slideshow Intro
✔️  Elements of Design
✔️  What is cartooning? What is it made out of? 

【Day 2】
Students will learn about creative thinking involved in creating a cartoon character.
✔️  Students will watch a clip on Droodles and interact with the out of the box thinking activities in the video.
✔️  Direct Instruction:: Students will follow along with the teacher as he turns some random Scribbles/Droodles in cartoon characters.
✔️  First Drawing Practice: Students will create their own characters from Droodles, with assistance from the instructor.
✔️  Direct Instruction: Students will follow along as the instructor turns words and names into pictures.
✔️  Second Drawing Practice: Students will create their own characters from words, including their own names, with assistance from the instructor.

【Day 3 - Day 4】
✔️  Students will learn about the different types of cartoon body part shapes (eyes, noses, ears, mouths, etc) involved in creating a cartoon character.
✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along with the teacher as he draws different cartoons characters.
✔️ Drawing Practice: Students will create their own characters, using different types of cartoon body part shapes, with assistance from the instructor.

【Day 5 - Day 6】
✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along with the teacher as he draws different cartoons characters from photographs. 
✔️ Drawing Practice: Students will create their own characters from photos, using different types of cartoon body part shapes that they think best fits the photos, with assistance from the instructor.

【Day 7 - Day 8】
Each Day goes by the following routine...
✔️ Students will observe a photos of different animals and think about what shapes would work best when drawing the character.
✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along with the teacher as he draws each animal from the photos and then drawing a more simplified cartoon version of the animal. (Different animals are drawn each day.)
✔️ Drawing Practice: students will see how quickly they can draw a simple animal drawing from multiple animal photos. They will also experiment with different cartoon shapes for eyes, mouths, and noses.
✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along as the instructor draws wackier cartoon animals, as well as anthropomorphic ones.
✔️ Drawing Practice: Students will try drawing an animal as wacky and overtly exaggerated as they can.

No background experience is required, but helpful.
Materials Needed:
- Fine-tip Pen
- Colored Pens or Pencils
- Paper/Sketchpad

This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded.  
This class will be presented via cameras from the instructor. He will have one camera at his face and another will be at the table where he is drawing, so that the student can see the instructor as speaks, and be able to observe step-by-step what the instructor is doing. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask ask questions during instruction. 

No writing or independent reading is necessary. 
Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that I are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.
Learning Goals
1.  Students will learn to create an expressive abstract composition (cartoon) based on real world objects.
2. Students will learn how to exaggerate emotional expression through their cartoon designs.
3. Students will learn to demonstrate understanding of shading techniques by using a thin black marker to add values and emphasis (Crosshatching, Stippling).
4. Students will learn to identify how selected elements/principles of design are used cartooning (and other works of art).
5. Students will learn about the training and skills required to become a comic book artist.
