Skilled photographers don’t just TAKE photos, they CREATE photos. Have you already been told you have a “good eye for photography.” That’s awesome! Let’s help you develop that eye further by...
My goal is that by the end of the class students will be able to look at a photo and identify which compositional technique(s) made that photo special. Students will also have the skills to create more impactful photos themselves. In addition, they will learn about giving and receiving constructive criticism.
I've been a professional photographer since 2001 and have a wide range of photography experience, including many years photographing babies and children. I've been teaching photography for over ten years to professional photographers, enthusiasts and teens through group workshops, private lessons and online classes. Currently, my favorite things to photograph are dogs, flowers, insects and food. I'd love to hear what you like to photograph! I'm recognized as a Master Photographer by the Professional Photographers of America and was also awarded the organization's Photographic Craftsman degree in recognition of my work teaching other professional photographers.
Homework Offered
The weekly videos the student is expected to watch will be approximately 30 minutes each week. In addition to the videos, students will receive a photo creation assignment each week where they can choose from several different challenges. They will then upload the photos to the classroom or send them to the teacher directly. They'll also be asked to provide constructive criticism on photos that are posted to the classroom. Because the amount of time the assignments take depends on the student's level of interest and motivation, the work could take between 15 minutes to a couple of hours each week. My hope is for students to spend more time applying the concepts they've learned than listening to the lectures.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Any camera (including your phone!) can be used to take the photos for this class. If you've previously taken a DSLR photography class, the exercises in this class would be a great opportunity for you to practice the skills you learned in that class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
As part of the class I also share links to curated collections of photos on the site 500px.com. These are collections I've created of photos by a variety of photographers to show additional examples of each of the compositional techniques.
WHAT I TEACH While most of my classes are photography-related, I also offer occasional classes on other topics that I think will benefit the community of students here on Outschool. BACKGROUND I’ve been a professional photographer since 2001 and...
