This course is designed for young advanced* Spanish-speakers who have ideally begun learning individual letter sounds and are now ready to practice them and combine those sounds to start reading syllables, words, and sentences. This is the class plan layout by week: Week 1 - Syllables with M (such as ma, me, mi, mo, and mu) Week 2 - Syllables with P (such as pa, pe, pi, po, and pu) with review from previous week Week 3 - Syllables with S (such as sa, se, si, so, and su) with review from previous weeks Week 4 - Syllables with L (such as la, le, li, lo, and lu) with review from previous weeks Week 5 - Review Though this FLEX version of the course includes no live class time, please see below the various ways we will interact over the course of this learning experience: ~Interaction by responses to instructional videos~ At the beginning of each week, I will post a video (fully in Spanish) introducing the consonant focus of the week, except for Week 5, which will be all four consonants for review. I will ask the learners to read with me syllables with that consonant and words that use that consonant and previous consonants. I will provide a booklet with syllables with that letter and ask learners to SUBMIT a video reading the booklet. (These can be recorded through the integrated Zoom function in the Outschool classroom page.) They can then comment with positive feedback on one another's videos. I will provide encouraging and constructive feedback on the learners' recordings. ~Interaction by sharing weekly readings~ Each week features a beginning Spanish reader (created by the teacher) that practices the sounds we have learned up to that point. At the beginning of each week, I share a book-reading video (video 2) of myself reading the story, and I provide versions of the stories for the learners to practice. Learners are encouraged to SUBMIT recordings of themselves reading these books as well. (These can be recorded through the integrated Zoom function in the Outschool classroom page.) They might be reading these books on their own. Some learners might prefer to repeat after someone else reading as they look at the words. (They could repeat through as they listen to my recording or as another adult reads.) I will give feedback on their readings as well. ~Interaction through feedback on worksheets~ Each week, I provide two worksheets--one to be completed while watching the worksheet video (Video 3), so I guide the learners through the worksheet, and another for learners to be completed on their own afterward. Learners can SUBMIT a photo of each of their completed worksheets as a comment in the classroom and comment on each other's work, as well as receive feedback from the instructor. Each week, I will give personalized to feedback to each learner through one or more video recordings in response to their submitted work. GAMES A final weekly aspect of the class will be games provided for printing for the learners to practice what we are learning by playing with family or friends. Games by week: Week 1 - Memory/Memoria Week 2 - Words with syllables Week 3 - Bingo Week 4 - Gameboard to play with toy cars/Tablero para jugar con carros de juguete Extra: I have... Who has...?/Yo tengo... ¿Quién tiene...? Week 5 - Connect 4/Conecta 4 Learners will also be provided a gameboard to help them visualize their progress in the course and for motivation to keep at it! Please note that in my written posts to the classroom will be bilingual or in English if I am unsure of parents' Spanish levels. However, my spoken communication in the videos to learners will be all in Spanish. Also note there will be at least five materials to print each week, so access to a printer will be very helpful in completing this class! *These students may be--for example--heritage speakers, children who have attended an immersion preschool, or "life-time speakers" with a parent or caregiver who has spoken to them in Spanish since infancy.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I received a minor in the Spanish language with my bachelor degree (2011). Later, I went on to complete the seven-week, level-five Spanish course at Roca Blanca Spanish School in Catalotepec, Mexico (2018). I have taught group Spanish classes to a variety of ages over a span of six years, five of which have been online. In 2018-2019, I led a preschool co-op in Spanish, primarily to children who were already fluent. Additionally, I have been raising my children primarily in Spanish since 2016. My older child reads fluently in Spanish, and my younger child is learning letter sounds and sight words, and I have provided the instruction and assistance they need along the way.
