This class is part of my Contemporary Artist Series, in which we learn about artists from the mid-20th century to today, analyze their art style and subject, and make a creation inspired by their art. Through the guided drawing process, students will learn how to use simple shapes and patterns to create a work of art inspired by artist Laurel Burch. My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows. My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time! At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is. Background knowledge in art concepts and/or the artist is helpful but not necessary! More detailed information about the content of this class can be found in the syllabus Background knowledge in art concepts and/or the artist is helpful but not necessary!

Introduction to Laurel Burch
We will study who Laurel Burch was, her contribution to art, and her art style, and begin using the elements of art to practice drawing a cat inspired by her work. Students can do a google image search of her art as well as look at her website and galleries that feature her art, to help them with ideas for their own art. We will practice drawing a horse and begin to explore patterns that can be drawn on it.
