Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
In this highly interactive, five-week class that continues from the one-time class "Intro to Latin for Kids," students will continue to begin speaking the ancient language of Latin. Through lively discussions, vocabulary lists or flashcards (which I will provide), visuals, optional note taking, and imitating my speaking, students will continue to learn how to pronounce Latin and will generate simple sentences—some of them funny. Also, because 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will learn Latin word roots that can increase their English vocabularies. There will even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots!

At minimum, the students will continue to use the present tense of the verb esse (to be) and begin conjugating "first conjugation" verbs. They also will learn nouns and their genders, using the subject (Nominative) case initially, plus adjective-noun agreement. In addition, they will receive an introduction to how the direct object (Accusative) case works.

Because this class builds onto the one-time class "Intro to Latin for Kids," students should take that class (as a prerequisite) prior to starting this 5-day class. If there is not a section of "Intro to Latin for Kids" that is convenient for your student(s), please send me a day/time request to schedule the 50-minute prerequisite class. (Your section may have as few as one student.)

I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary and/or flashcards.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
