Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will need to study Latin vocabulary each week. They will also need to complete translation exercises. They will also need to do workbook pages to enhance their learning and take quizzes to show what they have learned.

Class Experience

There are so many good reasons to learn Latin. Latin helps students build vocabulary, a real plus when it comes to college entrance exams. Latin also helps students to lay a firm foundation before learning other languages. Students will be able to more easily launch into learning one of the romance languages like Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, or Portuguese after taking Latin. 

This course will work through stages 4 - 6 of the Cambridge Unit 1 Latin book. Students will need to have a copy of the book as well as the workbook in order to successfully work through the class. 

Each week the class will work through approximately one-half of a stage in the book. Students will learn vocabulary and practice translation exercises. Students will use already-acquired knowledge to make educated guesses about Latin words. Students will learn Latin grammar through learning parts of speech. Students will also learn about the Roman culture in Pompeii before Mt Vesuvius erupted. 

Week One: Stage Four. Students will learn about singular and plural nouns and verbs. They will look at the forms of nominative plurals in different declensions. They will also learn about Roman theatre. 

Week Two: Stage Four continued. Students will continue to learn about plurals in Latin. They will continue to learn vocabulary. They will also look at derivatives of Latin words. 

Week Three: Stage Four and Five. Students will learn about present, imperfect, and perfect tenses. They will learn about slavery in Roman times. 

Week Four: Stage Five continued. Students will continue to practice the Latin tenses. They will concentrate on transition exercises. 

Week Five: Students will review Stages Four and Five through review exercises and a game. 

Week Six: Stage Six. Students will continue to learn about the perfect tense. They will practice using tenses. They will practice translating. 

Week Seven: Stage Six continued. Students will continue to memorize tenses. They will also learn about Roman beliefs about life after death. They will continue to practice Latin using translation exercises. 

Week Eight: Stage Six . Students will look at the accusative form of nouns. They will also learn about comparative and superlative. 

Week Nine: Review. Students will continue to practice Latin using translation exercises. They will learn about gladiators.
