Class Experience

There are so many good reasons to learn Latin. Latin helps students build vocabulary, a real plus when it comes to college entrance exams. Latin also helps students to lay a firm foundation before learning other languages. Students will be able to more easily launch into learning one of the romance languages like Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, or Portuguese after taking Latin.

This course will work through the last four stages of the Cambridge Unit 1 Latin book. Students will need to have a copy of the book, fifth edition.

Each week the class will work through parts of a stage in the book. Students will learn vocabulary and practice translation exercises. Students will use already acquired knowledge to make educated guesses about Latin words. Students will learn Latin grammar through learning parts of speech. Students will also learn about the Roman culture in Pompeii before Mt Vesuvius erupted.

Students will have assigned each week: videos, homework, worksheets, online practice, and cultural videos.

Week One: Stage Ten. Students will practice subject verb agreement. They will review all known cases. They will learn what education was like in Roman times.

Week Two: Stage Ten continued. Students will continue to review cases. They will continue to learn vocabulary. They will learn about teachers in ancient Rome.

Week Three: Stage Ten continued. Students will learn about comparative and superlative. They will also review plural verb forms. They will learn interesting facts about life in Roman times.

Week Four: Stage Eleven. Students will continue to increase their vocabulary. They will learn how the Roman government worked.

Week Five: Stage Eleven continued. Students will learn about asking questions in Latin. Students will learn how Romans elected their government.

Week Six: Stage Eleven continued. Students will continue to learn how to ask questions. They will try to decide if Rome was an empire or a republic.

Week Seven: Stage Twelve. Students will look more in-depth at the perfect and imperfect tenses. They will continue learning vocabulary and translating. They will learn if they could have survived Mt Vesuvius erupting.

Week Eight: Stage Twelve continued. Students will continue to practice Latin using translation exercises. They will learn what the Romans thought of Mt Vesuvius.

Week Nine: Stage Twelve continued. Students will review verb tenses. They will witness a computer generation of Pompeii's last days.
