Class Experience

These weekly summer reading lessons focus on correct pronunciation, which helps increase reading confidence, fluency, and motivation. I love phonics and ensuring that students understand how to produce the sounds English letters make. Each week, your child will read a Kori's Clubhouse Book selection with a small group. We will echo and/or choral read.

Echo reading is teacher led. Students repeat after the teacher. Choral reading gives children an opportunity to read selected lines from the text as a group. This helps build confidence and fluency.

We will begin with greetings and a quick check-in to see how everyone's day is going. From there, we will read our book selection, which I screen share inside the classroom. After group discussion, students start, but might not complete, a small activity related to the book. Completion of the activity during the lesson is optional; however, caregivers should print it out for their learner(s) just in case! Then we say our goodbyes until next time.

Sample lesson:
"Alex Ant Baxter Buffalo": Alex Ant wants to make a new friend. Will Baxter Buffalo become his new BFF?
Discussion question: Do you think an ant and a buffalo could become friends?
Skill-building activity: Choose between Alex Ant or Baxter Buffalo coloring sheet and letter writing practice. Sheets will be available as a downloadable PDF inside the classroom. Please print prior to club start time.

Kori's Clubhouse Books feature the Alpha Books. These selections focus on one or two letters of the alphabet in each story. The stories are fun, quirky, and easy to read while providing just the right challenge for budding readers. Inspired by my work with ELL (English Language Learners) worldwide, I've written and designed these stories to make learning to read fun.

I enjoy working with young readers at all levels and strive to create a safe, fun learning environment. My classroom includes virtual high-fives, thumbs up, stars, and plenty of verbal and nonverbal encouragement. I firmly believe in Carol Dweck's "not, yet" approach to mastering material.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Kori's Clubhouse is all about developing confidence and reading fluency. With a focus on correct letter sound production, children make connections between those sounds and the letters they match. I created each book with my current ELL learners top of mind, so I'm confident they offer the right balance of quirkiness and challenge.

I earned a master's degree in Educational Psychology from Ball State University; a graduate certificate in Positive Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia; and a bachelor's degree in Psychology with minors in English and Sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I've been a substitute teacher in three school districts for the past six years with a Local Substitute Teaching Permit issued by the Nebraska Department of Education. Other certifications include life coach, 180-hr TESOL, and 180-hr TEFL. I'm a huge fan of lifelong learning and learn-by-doing approaches in my personal and professional endeavors.

As a freelance writer and editor, I'm a member of Sisters in Crime, Crime Writers of Color, Editors of Color, ACES: The Society for Editing, and the Nebraska Writers Guild. Since 2007, my work has been published in journals and online magazines. My writing includes an exploration of the intersection of behavioral, neuro-, and positive psychology concepts like mindsets, emotions, and motivation.
