Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
In this class, young writers will learn that writing is a way to communicate meaning. The children will work productively during class and generate topics, plan writing, and record their thoughts on paper. The goal is to teach the writing process by first drawing a picture and then moving on from drawing to phonetics to sounding out words. Students are motivated because they can choose a topic that is important to them. We will share our writings with our classmates!
Students will plan their stories across pages and be thoughtful about their illustrations. Writers will add details to their pictures and add labels using letter-sound correspondence. Some of our lessons will include making a movie in our mind and visualize our stories in our heads. I will model my writing and explain with explicit mini-lessons on how to tell our stories across pages. I will also be teaching the students what to do when they are done with their writing pieces. They can add to their writings and revise when necessary.
The goal of this writing class is for students to feel comfortable with their writing and offer strategies to work independently. We will all become authors in this wonderful writing class!
