Kindergarten Reading Tutoring

In this 1:1 course, your child will learn to read/grow their skills by reading with a professional. We start with books containing phonetic, single-syllabic words to build their abilities and end when your child is ready for chapter books.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
The first time your student enrolls in this course, we will spend a little bit of time getting to know each other and feeling comfortable. Then we go through a basic initial assessment to determine your child's current reading level so we can start from there. We will read together with whatever time remains.

After that, we will read together for 20 minutes every time we meet. We will read from books of increasing difficulty so that your child's skills continually grow and improve. If your child is struggling on any particular book, we will pause and practice the skills and words in that book until your child has mastered them and is ready to move on.

In order to help your child progress, we will spend a bit of time during class working on the next phonics skill needed as the books progress in difficulty. I typically do this by introducing the skill and then playing a game that highlights the skill. The games are short and take a few minutes at the beginning or end of class.

Students who are working on mastering the alphabet will start there. We will work on rhyming, blending, segmenting, and isolating sounds to help children get ready for reading.

Once they know their alphabet, we will start with "Bob Books" sets 1-4 before moving on to regular books of reading levels 0.4-3.0.

Rewards system:
Every time your child successfully passes off a book, they will get to put a sticker in their digital sticker book. Every time they complete a page in their sticker book (by earning 7 stickers), they will earn a brain break. Brain breaks consist of 1-2 minute sing/dance videos from Go Noodle, Big Block Singsong, and similar YouTubers. Once your child has earned 4 brain breaks, you will be sent an Outschool coupon.
