Description
Class Experience
Improved retention of HFW's. The retention rate will vary for each child. Any improvement is good improvement. Demonstrated ability to read a short (4-5 sentences) with 70-80 % accuracy. Ability to compose a simple sentence independently with minimal teacher support. (Noun- verb- punctuation) and read it.
My instructional process draws heavily from the Whole Language approach to reading, phonetic learning and guided reading practices. I believe each of us learns in ways that are unique to our own talents, intuitions, environments, and inclinations and personality. In short, we all learn a bit differently. This is why I use several approaches in my Instructional process. Each child must feel valued and cared for to learn best. In my long career as an educator I have seen students flourish and learn under one teacher and not another. Quite often this is due to instructional styles and methods used. I have learned one must be flexible and willing to embrace and use what ever method reaches the individual child. I hold BS in Elementary and Early Childhood education (K-9) from Asbury University. I have completed some graduate studies in Early Childhood Special Education and have a Certificate in Infant Toddler Studies from PITC Institute in California. I am semi-retired and doing what I love best, teaching kids because I want to, not because I have to.
Students will be given short fun homework assignments on days one and two of class. The homework should take between 5 and 15 minutes to complete. Homework assignments will be posted to the classroom and may be included in the next days presentation.
Lined paper (Kindergarten of first grade writing tablet) a black crayon or non-permanent marker. A List of High Frequency Words (HFW) that can be printed from the handout in the classroom. Suggestions for helping your child practice HFW's and Rhyming words, printed from the document in the classroom.
Lerner progress is assessed through achievement of the stated learning goals: Improved retention of HFW's. The retention rate will vary for each child. Any improvement is good improvement. Demonstrated ability to read a short story (4-5 sentences) with 70-80 % accuracy. Ability to compose a simple sentence independently with minimal teacher support. (Noun- verb- punctuation) and read it.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I prepare my own materials for class based on my 40 + years experience and the interests of the children.
